NaCSA Commissioner Engages Irish Embassy on Social Protection...

*Irish Embassy Freetown* – The Commissioner of the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA); Ambassador Ernest Mbaimba Ndomahina has engaged the Irish Embassy on social protection.

It could be recalled that in April this year, the Irish Ambassador; Ambassador Aidan Fitzpatrick paid a courtesy call to the Commissioner of NaCSA. The main purpose of the visit was to forge a partnership in helping Social Protection for the people of Sierra Leone. The two international development experts agreed to deepen cooperation and develop a pragmatic approach to supporting Social Protection.

In continuation of this discussion and to broaden the partnership, the Commissioner of NaCSA and his team of experts have met with the Irish Embassy to colour a strategic roadmap that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of social protection impact.

Having highlighted the delivery capacity of NaCSA, and the efficiency of the social protection systems, processes and procedures, Amb. Ndomahina re-echoed the need to embark on social protection interventions that will graduate the poor from poverty to a state of building sustainable livelihoods and creating a self-development pathway that will prevent them from degenerating into poverty.

*‘’…in addition to the existing National Social Protection Strategy, the Government of Sierra Leone through its national development plan has penned down many interventions to eradicate poverty. The transformative agenda of His Excellency Dr Julius Maada Bio focuses on Food Security, Human Capital Development, and Job Creation. It builds on the progress made in the previous plan and aims to address unfinished business and emerging challenges, with a renewed determination to accelerate efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030’’* Amb. Ndomahina Noted.

The Commissioner further noted that NaCSA is well-positioned to deliver on its social protection mandate and that there is a need to advance this discussion and create the opportunity to learn from other countries.  

This expert discussion on possible social protection collaboration rekindles hope to reach the most vulnerable Sierra Leoneans including persons with disability. The meeting ended with optimism that the rich discussions from Amb. Ndomahina, Ambassador Aidan Fitzpatrick, Caroll Hannon – the Irish Embassy Head of Development, Dr Susan Robert – NaCSA Senior Director for Programme Development and Quality Assurance, Maada Ngombu – The Director of Field Operations from NaCSA and Lyndon Baines Johnson – NaCSA’s Environmental Specialist will add value to the country’s social protection systems.
